The Summerside Curling Club is incredibly proud to share that Cliff Poirier has been awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership by Curl PEI, alongside fellow longtime official Kay Atkinson.
Cliff is already a well-deserving member of the PEI Curling Hall of Fame and Museum as a builder, and this latest honor recognizes over 35 years of unparalleled dedication to the sport.
Below is the official citation from Amy Duncan, Executive Director of Curl PEI:
"For over 35 years, Cliff Poirier has been one of Prince Edward Island’s most dedicated and influential curling volunteers, making outstanding contributions as an official, educator, organizer, and administrator. Since earning his first officiating certification in 1986, he has progressed through advanced levels of certification and become a respected instructor responsible for training and mentoring new officials across the province.
Cliff has participated in over 20 national curling championships and major events throughout Atlantic Canada, serving in a wide range of leadership and officiating roles, including Head Official, Umpire, Timing Supervisor, On-Ice Officials Supervisor, and Event Organizer. His expertise has been sought at prestigious events such as the Brier, Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canadian Juniors, Canadian Seniors, Canada Games, Grand Slam events, and World Curling Federation championships.
Beyond officiating, Cliff has played a critical role in organizing and delivering national and provincial competitions. He has served on organizing committees, recruited and trained volunteers, managed officiating teams, introduced new timing technology to Curl PEI, and led educational clinics on rules and officiating standards for coaches, athletes, and officials.
His leadership has extended beyond competition through service as a Curl PEI delegate, board member, mentor, and club volunteer. Whether organizing bonspiels, developing officials, implementing new systems, or supporting major championships, Cliff has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the growth and success of curling in Prince Edward Island.
In conclusion, Kay Atkinson and Cliff Poirier have made a lasting and significant impact on curling in Prince Edward Island through their many years of dedicated officiating and leadership. They ensured Curl PEI events were conducted to high standards, helping athletes prepare for national competition while staying current with rules and best practices. Their most enduring contribution has been the development and mentorship of umpires and timers, creating a strong and sustainable network of qualified officials across the province. Their efforts have elevated officiating standards in PEI, leading to local officials being selected for national events and establishing one of Canada's strongest umpiring programs. Although they have retired, the systems, standards, and officials they developed continue to benefit Curl PEI today. So with that, we at Curl PEI want to present you with Honorary Lifetime Memberships. Thank you so, so much for your years of time and contributions to the sport of curling on PEI."
Please join us in congratulating Cliff the next time you see him at the club!
